How to Use Old ADT Equipment Without Paying for Monitoring

You cancelled ADT (or moved into a house where someone else did), and there's a keypad on the wall, sensors on the doors, and a metal box in a closet. The good news, which ADT has little incentive to advertise: much of that hardware is rebranded Honeywell or DSC equipment that can keep working - as a free local alarm, as a self-monitored system, or monitored by a different company for a fraction of ADT's rate. Whether your equipment qualifies depends almost entirely on which panel generation you have. That's step one.

Step 1: Identify which ADT panel you actually have

Open the keypad's label, check the metal enclosure (often in a basement, closet, or utility room), or look at the main touchscreen's branding. The common generations:

If you're not sure what you're looking at, photograph the keypad and the circuit board label inside the enclosure - a takeover company will identify it from photos, usually for free. (Careful opening the enclosure: expect a tamper alert and a loud siren if the system is powered and armed-capable. Step 2: Do you actually own it? What ADT's own contract says

People plan a takeover, buy a communicator, and only then wonder whether ADT is going to ask for the hardware back. The answer is published, it is short, and it is different for the two halves of ADT's business.

If ADT professionally installed it, ADT's own Residential Services Contract states the position plainly in Section 8, "Ownership and Payment Obligation": "All equipment installed by ADT pursuant to this Contract shall be owned by the Customer except as otherwise agreed in writing." The same document reserves ADT's right to "repossess or disable the Equipment" if you have not paid off the equipment price and installation cost. So the default is that the panel, the keypad and the sensors are yours, and the exception is an unpaid balance or a separate written agreement. That "except as otherwise agreed in writing" clause is the one to check, because leased arrangements do exist, more often in commercial installs.

If you bought ADT Self Setup, the DIY line, the rules are the opposite in shape. ADT's support centre says to call within seven days of termination to start a return, that it will issue a Return Material Authorization number, and that the required equipment must reach ADT's warehouse "within twenty-one (21) calendar days of the issuance of the RMA," in good working order.

One honest oddity on that same ADT page, worth knowing before you assume the worst. The body text warns that your card "may be charged for the full MSRP for return-required equipment that is not received in our warehouse 30 days from your cancellation date." The footnote directly beneath it says something different: "if you fail to return the equipment you will not be charged the Equipment Non-Return Fee nor will you receive a refund for the equipment purchased." Those two sentences do not agree, and we are not going to tell you which one your account will be billed under. Get the answer for your account in writing before you cancel, and keep it.

ADT publishes two answers to the ownership question, and they do not agree

We re-read both documents on August 19, 2026, and they say different things on the same day, on the same website.

The contract says the equipment is yours. Paragraph 8 of ADT's Monitoring Contract Terms, quoted above: "All equipment installed by ADT pursuant to this Contract shall be owned by the Customer except as otherwise agreed in writing."

The terms-and-conditions page says the opposite. Under "ADT Professional Installation", in the General block that sits beneath ADT's current promotional offers, the page states in full: "Professionally installed system remains property of ADT."

Both sentences were live on adt.com on August 19, 2026. We are not going to tell you which one governs your system, because that depends on the paperwork you actually signed, in the year you signed it, in your state, and possibly through a dealer rather than ADT itself. What we can tell you is what to do about it, and it is cheap:

  • Find your own contract before you buy anything. A takeover communicator, a chip swap or a technician visit is money spent on the assumption that the hardware is yours to convert.
  • If you cannot find it, ask ADT in writing and keep the answer. "Is the installed equipment at my address owned by me or by ADT?" is a one-sentence question and the reply is the document you want in hand.
  • Check whether the equipment and installation charge was ever paid off. Paragraph 8 ties ownership to that, and the same contract reserves ADT's right to repossess or disable equipment that has not been.
  • Do not read a promotional page as your contract. The "remains property of ADT" line appears in offer terms, not in the signed agreement, which is exactly the sort of distinction that gets lost when it is repeated second-hand.

We are flagging the contradiction rather than resolving it because resolving it would mean guessing, and the cost of guessing wrong here is a takeover kit bought for hardware somebody else owns. If ADT reconciles the two pages we will update this section and say so.

The one thing that is definitely not yours is the sign. The same residential contract states that "All ADT yard signs and window stickers provided to me at any time will remain the property of ADT and may be removed by ADT." You own the alarm; you are borrowing the sticker. In practice nobody comes to collect them, but leaving an ADT sign on the lawn over a system ADT no longer monitors is a claim you cannot back up, and it is the sort of detail an insurer or a buyer's inspector may ask about.

This is a summary of publicly posted contract terms, not legal advice, and the version you signed governs. Terms differ by state, by dealer, and by year.

Step 3: What each piece is actually worth to you

"Can I reuse my ADT equipment" is really nine separate questions, and the answers are not the same. Sorted by how much value is usually left in each item:

The pattern is worth stating out loud, because it is the opposite of what most people assume: the cheap, boring parts hold their value and the expensive-looking parts do not. The touchscreen and the cellular radio are the two items that most look like they should be worth something, and they are the two with the least reuse value.

Option A: Free - keep it as a local (unmonitored) alarm

A powered panel with a valid user code doesn't need ADT's permission to keep doing its basic job: sensors trip, siren sounds. For plenty of households - especially with modern cameras handling the "tell me what happened" role - a loud local alarm is a reasonable free baseline. Three maintenance realities:

  • Backup battery. Panel batteries (typically a sealed 12V lead-acid unit, roughly $15–$30 to replace - verify for your model) die every 3–5 years and cause the low-battery beeping that makes people rip these systems out.   • Dead communicator warnings. Panels that used a phone line or an old cellular radio may periodically complain they can't "call home." U.S. carriers shut down 3G/CDMA networks in 2022 - a change that affected millions of alarm communicators - so an older cellular module is almost certainly inert. A takeover company (or the panel manual) can show you how to silence communication-failure trouble beeps.
  • Nobody is coming. Obvious but worth stating: a local alarm deters and alerts neighbors; it does not summon police. If that matters for your situation, weigh the paid options below - our monitoring decision guide covers who genuinely needs response and who doesn't.

Option B: Cheap - no-contract takeover monitoring

This is the option almost nobody tells cancelled ADT customers about. Independent "takeover" monitoring companies specialize in connecting existing Honeywell/DSC-based panels - including ADT-branded ones - to their monitoring centers, month-to-month, at rates that undercut ADT dramatically.   • GeoArm advertised no-contract monitoring from $8/month, no activation fee, and publishes takeover instructions for the Safewatch Pro 3000 specifically. It claims support for the broadest range of panel brands.
  • Alarm Grid advertised no-contract plans from $10/month and maintains detailed public documentation of which ADT panels can and can't be converted.
  • Other no-contract players (AlarmClub, SafeHomeCentral, and regional companies) compete in the same $8–$15/month band.

What a takeover typically involves for a Safewatch Pro 3000: replacing ADT's proprietary firmware chip with a standard Honeywell Vista-20P chip (inexpensive, and required for features like Total Connect remote access), and adding a communicator the new company can receive signals from - usually an LTE cellular or internet module, since ADT's communicator is proprietary or obsolete. Budget roughly $100–$250 in one-time hardware depending on the path - verify with the company you choose; several will walk you through self-install over the phone. Note GeoArm's published guidance that third-party monitoring on the Safewatch Pro 3000 generally requires a panel from 2005 or later.

Compare the math to a new system: $150 of takeover hardware plus $10/month beats replacing perfectly good wired sensors, and the wired sensors already in your walls are often better-installed than anything you'd stick on with adhesive. One administrative note: switching monitoring companies usually means updating your local alarm permit - check your city's rules.

Option C: Self-monitoring conversion

If you want phone notifications without any monthly fee, Vista- and DSC-based ADT panels support third-party IP modules - the Envisalink board (EyezOn) is the best-known, used by hobbyists with Safewatch panels for years - that push events to an app or to Home Assistant. Cost is a one-time ~$100–$150 (verify current pricing), plus comfort with panel wiring and programming menus. This path requires the installer code, so read the installer code section of our inherited-alarm guide first. It's the tinkerer's option: powerful, cheap, and entirely your responsibility when it breaks.

Option D: Keep the wiring, replace the brain

Options A to C all keep the old ADT panel. Option D throws the panel away and keeps the thing that actually cost money to install: the wire running to every door and window. This is the route for someone who wants a modern app and a modern system but does not want adhesive sensors stuck over holes where real ones already are.

Ring's Retrofit Alarm Kit is the mainstream version. It is a $79.99 board (as of August 2026) that reads your existing hardwired contact zones and reports them to a Ring Alarm base station over Z-Wave, which means the old ADT panel can be powered down and left in the closet or removed entirely. Ring states the existing wired panel "does not need to be actively monitored or in use," but the zones themselves must be intact.

The limits are published, specific, and the reason most people who try this get a surprise. Straight from Ring's own documentation:

  • Contact zones only. Wired indoor and outdoor sirens, wired smoke or CO detectors and wired keypads "are not supported and should not be added." Your old bell box and your hardwired smokes do not come along.
  • Eight zones per kit, with additional kits addable to the same Ring Alarm if you have more.
  • A zone, not a sensor. Older wired systems chain several windows onto one zone. The whole zone reports as a single opening, so Ring will tell you the zone tripped and not which window it was.
  • 5,200 ohms maximum resistance, which Ring says is intended to tolerate the 1K, 2K and 4.7K end-of-line resistors common in wired systems. Anything above that "cannot be reliably monitored."
  • No zone doubling and no zone expanders. If your old ADT install used either, those zones will not come across. This one catches people out, because zone doubling was a normal way to squeeze sixteen zones out of an eight-zone board.
  • Two-wire zones by design. Four-wire devices (most wired motion detectors) need their own power supply with its own battery backup, and Ring warns that without the backup the zone will read open and false-alarm on every power cut.
  • Not a beginner job. Ring's own words: "You should not attempt to install this yourself if you are inexperienced" with multimeters, wiring and schematics.

Ring also flags two things that have nothing to do with wiring and that a seller has no reason to raise: check whether your existing system carries "contractual obligations, including early termination fees," and expect to update or obtain an alarm permit if you are switching companies. The honest comparison. If your ADT panel is a Safewatch Pro 3000 in good order, Option B (takeover) is usually cheaper and keeps sirens, keypads and motions working, at the cost of living with a 2005-era interface. Option D costs more up front (a base station plus the retrofit board, and a subscription for remote arming) and throws away working hardware, but gives you an app, a supported product and a system that a normal person can add to. Neither is wrong. What is wrong is buying a whole new wireless kit and abandoning the wiring, which is what most people do because nobody selling them the kit mentions the alternative.

Reusing ADT wireless sensors: the 345 MHz question

If your ADT system was wireless rather than wired, the sensors themselves may still have a life. Many Honeywell-lineage wireless sensors sold through ADT transmit on 345 MHz, and Qolsys sells a plug-in card, the IQ Card-345 (part QC0005-840, about $43 from Alarm Grid in August 2026), that adds 345 MHz support to its IQ Panel 4, IQ4 Hub, IQ4 NS and IQ5 family. One legacy card at a time, in the panel's dedicated slot.

Qolsys publishes a tested-compatible list. These are the Honeywell devices on it, with the loop number each uses, because getting the loop wrong is the usual reason a sensor enrols and then never reports:

Two cautions, stated because the optimistic version of this section is the one you will find elsewhere. First, Qolsys publishes that list against the IQ Panel 2 Plus on firmware 2.1.0 and higher; the card itself is sold for the IQ4 and IQ5 families, so confirm the panel and firmware you are actually buying against your own sensor model numbers before spending anything. Second, not every ADT wireless sensor is a 345 MHz Honeywell device. Sensors supplied with the newer ADT Command generation are a Resideo ProSeries variant, and encrypted proprietary sensors do not enrol on third-party panels no matter which card is fitted. The model number moulded into the back of the sensor is the only thing that settles it. Photograph one and ask before you buy a panel around it.

What will not take your old ADT equipment

Shorter list, and more useful than it looks, because these are the systems people most often ask about:

  • SimpliSafe. A closed ecosystem. SimpliSafe's own support forum records the position on third-party devices as "Not In Development," and its base stations pair only to SimpliSafe accessories. There is no retrofit board and no legacy-frequency card. Nothing from your ADT install transfers, including the wiring.
  • Ring's wireless sensors. The Retrofit Alarm Kit bridges wired zones. It does not receive your ADT wireless sensors, which stay on 345 MHz and are invisible to a Ring base station.
  • ADT Command as a host. It is a dead end in both directions: it cannot be taken over by another company, and it is not a panel you can bring foreign sensors to.
  • Anything, if the zones fail a continuity test. A cut, corroded or painted-over circuit is not a compatibility problem and no product fixes it. Test before you buy.

When the equipment can't be reused

  • ADT Command panel: the panel itself is a takeover dead end, but its sensors may not be. Many ADT wireless sensors transmit on the Honeywell-compatible 345 MHz band, and several modern panels (e.g., Qolsys IQ4 in its 345 MHz version) are sold specifically to adopt them - an equipment vendor or takeover company can confirm compatibility from your sensor model numbers before you buy anything.
  • Wired sensors with a hopeless panel: the wiring is the valuable part. Replacement wired panels (Honeywell Vista, DSC PowerSeries) or retrofit boards like Konnected can adopt existing door, window, and motion circuits, preserving the clean installed look with modern brains.
  • Truly obsolete all-in-ones: if the unit is decades old, battery-swollen, or fails self-test, retire it. Remove it (or at minimum its battery - lead-acid batteries go to battery recycling, not the trash), take down the ADT yard sign if the system no longer works (an obviously dead system advertised on the lawn helps no one), and start fresh with our guide to choosing a system.

Decision shortcut: Safewatch/Vista or DSC label → get a free takeover assessment from a no-contract monitoring company before spending anything. Command touchscreen → plan around new equipment, possibly keeping your sensors.
